From St. Barth airport to Shell Beach, what to expect

Shell Beach is a sheltered cove just below Gustavia, named for the countless shells washed up along its shoreline. It sits within walking distance of the harbor, so a taxi from the airport drops you at the top of town and the beach is a short stroll away.

From the moment we step out of the SBH terminal, Shell Beach is roughly 8 minutes away. The standard daytime fare hovers around 30 euros. After 6:30pm, on Sundays and on public holidays, plan an extra 5 euros. Between midnight and 6am the surcharge climbs to 10 euros, but very few drivers operate that late so we always pre-book in that case.

A practical detail: when calling a driver directly, send a WhatsApp message rather than a phone call if you can. Most drivers handle several calls a day, and a written message with pickup, destination and time is easier to confirm and harder to lose track of.

Can the same driver pick us up for the return trip?

Often yes. Once you have ridden with someone you trust, save their number. We do this all the time for round-trip transfers. Most drivers appreciate the repeat business and will block off the time for you.

What if no taxi is waiting when we land at SBH?

If the airport stand is empty, do not panic. Call any driver from our directory or message us on WhatsApp. We usually have someone there within 15 minutes. The taxis you sometimes see lined up at arrivals are often pre-booked already, so always ask before getting in.

How long is the drive from St. Barth airport to Shell Beach?

About 8 minutes in normal traffic. Add a few minutes on cruise ship days or during peak holiday weeks when the road through St-Jean slows down.

Should we tip the taxi driver in St. Barth?
