How Much Does a Taxi Cost in St. Barth?

There is no Uber in Saint-Barthélemy. Taxis run on fixed, regulated fares. Here is exactly what you can expect to pay in 2026, route by route, including evening and night surcharges.

Quick answer

Daytime (6am to 6:30pm): 30 to 65 euros per ride, depending on the route.

Evening (after 6:30pm), Sundays and holidays: add 5 euros to the daytime fare.

Night (midnight to 6am): add 10 euros to the daytime fare.

Standby service: 150 to 300 euros per hour, more in high season.

No Uber, no Lyft. The island has 49 licensed taxi drivers who set fares according to a regulated schedule.

Saint-Barthélemy is a small French Caribbean island with no ride-hailing apps. Taxis are independently operated but their prices are not negotiable. The Collectivité (the local government) sets the rates. So whether you call a driver yourself, ask the hotel front desk, or grab one at the airport stand, you should pay roughly the same amount. This page breaks down what you will actually pay in 2026 for the most common rides on the island.

Daytime fares (6am to 6:30pm)

During the day, expect to pay between 30 and 65 euros for almost any ride on the island. The reason the range is narrow is simple: St. Barth is just 9.4 square miles. The longest taxi ride from one end to the other rarely exceeds 25 minutes. Below are the most common routes from Gustaf III Airport (SBH) and from Gustavia, with the official daytime fare ranges.

The figures above are for one to four passengers in a standard taxi. Larger vans for five to eight passengers exist on the island and may carry a small additional surcharge for the bigger vehicle. If you are a group, mention it when you book so the dispatcher sends an appropriate vehicle.

Evening surcharge (after 6:30pm)

From 6:30pm to midnight, an evening surcharge of 5 euros applies to every ride. This means a daytime 35-euro ride from Gustavia to Saline beach becomes 40 euros after 6:30pm. The surcharge is a flat amount, not a percentage. It is the same regardless of the route.

+5 EUR Evening (6:30pm to midnight)

Same regulated routes, plus a flat 5 euros. Applies every day of the week. Most dinner rides fall in this window.

The reason for the evening surcharge is straightforward. After 6:30pm, drivers shift into a different work pattern. Many transition to standby service for restaurant clients or finish their day. The 5-euro premium covers the limited supply during prime dinner hours.

Night surcharge (midnight to 6am)

Between midnight and 6am, the surcharge increases to 10 euros per ride. So a 30-euro daytime ride from the airport to Gustavia becomes 40 euros if you somehow arrive on a late charter flight at 1am. In practice, taxi availability between midnight and 6am is very limited. Most drivers are off-duty. If you have a late arrival or an early-morning flight, pre-booking is essential.

+10 EUR Night (midnight to 6am)

Few drivers operate at these hours. Pre-book your ride or message us in advance, ideally 24 hours ahead.

For a 5am or 6am airport pickup, your best bet is to arrange standby the night before with the same driver, or to message us on WhatsApp and we will find a driver who covers night shifts.

Sunday and holiday rates

Sundays and French public holidays carry the same flat 5-euro surcharge as evenings, even during the day. Public holidays observed on the island include New Year's Day, Easter Monday, Labor Day (May 1), Victory Day (May 8), Ascension, Pentecost Monday, Bastille Day (July 14), Assumption (August 15), All Saints (November 1), Armistice Day (November 11), Christmas, and a few local feast days.

If your trip falls on a busy holiday weekend, taxi availability is reduced and standby slots fill up days in advance. For New Year's Eve, weekly Saturday-to-Saturday turnover days in high season, and during the Bucket Regatta and Cata Cup, plan ahead.

Standby service: how it works and what it costs

Standby is the most popular evening service on the island, and it is genuinely useful. Here is how it works: you book a driver for a block of time, typically two to four hours. The driver picks you up at your villa or hotel, drops you at a restaurant or beach club, then waits in the parking lot. When you are ready, you call or text and they take you home. No hunting for a taxi at 11pm. No surge pricing. No surprises.

What does standby cost?

  • Low season (May to October): around 150 euros per hour, sometimes less for shorter blocks.
  • Mid season (November, early December, post-Easter): 180 to 220 euros per hour.
  • High season (mid-December to mid-April): 250 to 300 euros per hour, with peak rates around Christmas, New Year's Eve, and February.

When does standby make sense?

  • Dinner at a remote restaurant like Le Toiny, Santa Fe, or O'Corail in Grand Cul-de-Sac.
  • Evenings out in Gustavia where finding a return taxi after 11pm can be difficult.
  • Group of four or more, where the per-person cost becomes very reasonable.
  • Anniversary, birthday, or any night you want to skip the logistics.

To book standby, call any taxi driver directly from our taxi directory, or message us on WhatsApp and we will arrange a reliable driver for the evening.

Why are St. Barth taxi fares regulated?

St. Barth has only 49 licensed taxi drivers for an island that hosts hundreds of thousands of visitors a year. Demand always outstrips supply during high season. Without regulation, fares could reach absurd levels, especially around the airport and during peak weeks. The Collectivité sets fixed prices for each route to keep things fair and predictable.

Drivers do not negotiate. They do not run meters. The fare for a given route is the same whether you book in person or through a hotel. If a driver tries to charge significantly more than the regulated rate, you can ask for the official tariff sheet, which they are required to keep in the vehicle.

This regulation is also why there is no Uber. The licensing system protects local drivers and prevents undercutting. For more on transport options on the island, read our complete getting around guide.

Tipping in St. Barth taxis

Tipping is not required. The fare is fully regulated and includes the driver's pay. This is different from the United States, where tipping a taxi or rideshare driver 15 to 20 percent is expected. In St. Barth, you can simply pay the fare.

That said, small tips are appreciated for:

  • Help with multiple suitcases at the airport.
  • Long waits during standby beyond the booked time.
  • Local tips and recommendations during the ride.
  • Going slightly out of the way to a less common location.

Two to five euros is a kind gesture for great service. There is no shame in not tipping if the ride was straightforward. Either way, drivers will not act offended.

How to pay

Cash in euros is the safest bet. Most drivers prefer it. Some accept credit cards or contactless payments via mobile terminals, but availability varies. If card payment matters to you, ask when you book.

Where to get euros

  • ATMs at SBH Airport on arrival.
  • Several ATMs in Gustavia near the harbor (BNP Paribas, Banque Populaire, Crédit Agricole).
  • An ATM at the Marche U supermarket in St-Jean.

US dollars are accepted by some drivers but at unfavorable conversion rates. Stick to euros if possible.

Splitting a ride

You can split the fare among passengers in the same vehicle, but the meter does not split itself. Settle up among yourselves, then pay the driver in one transaction. Most drivers carry change for 50-euro notes, but try not to hand them a 200-euro bill for a 30-euro ride.
