There Is No Uber in St. Barth. Here Is What to Use Instead.

Saint-Barthélemy has no ride-hailing apps, no Uber, no Lyft, no Bolt. The good news: getting around is straightforward once you know the four options that locals and seasoned visitors actually use.

The short answer

No, there is no Uber in St. Barth. No Lyft, no Bolt, no Cabify, no equivalent app.

What you use instead: licensed taxis, private transport companies, rental cars or scooters, or a free WhatsApp concierge.

For most visitors, the quickest path is to message us on WhatsApp and we will connect you with an available driver. No fee, no markup. You pay the driver directly at the regulated fare.

If you have just landed at SBH or you are planning your first trip, the absence of Uber can feel disorienting. You are used to opening an app, picking a ride, and tracking it. None of that exists here. But the alternatives are easy and have worked for the island for decades. This guide walks through every realistic option, with honest tradeoffs.

Why no Uber in St. Barth

Three reasons:

1. The island is tiny

Saint-Barthélemy is just 9.4 square miles, roughly 25 square kilometers, with about 10,000 residents. The total addressable market for ride-hailing is small. There is no Uber-style commercial case for a global rollout.

2. Taxi licenses are tightly regulated

Only 49 licensed taxi drivers operate on the island. Licenses are limited and difficult to obtain. The Collectivité de Saint-Barthélemy controls who can carry paying passengers and at what price. Ride-hailing apps would clash with this licensing framework, which protects local drivers and prevents price wars.

3. Fares are fixed by the local government

Every taxi route has a regulated price. There is no surge pricing, no demand-based fluctuation, no negotiated fares. Algorithm-driven pricing, the core of Uber and Lyft, would not be allowed.

The result is a stable, transparent system. Prices are predictable. Drivers earn a fair living. Visitors are not gouged. Read more about how much taxis cost in St. Barth for the exact 2026 numbers.

Option 1: Taxis (49 licensed drivers)

Calling a taxi directly is the most common way to get around. There are 49 individual drivers on the island, each operating their own vehicle, mostly Mercedes vans, sedans, and SUVs. They wait at one of two taxi stands or take phone bookings.

Taxi stands

  • SBH Airport stand: right outside the terminal. Phone +590 590 27 75 81.
  • Gustavia stand: on Rue de la République near the post office. Phone +590 590 27 66 31.

During the day, you can simply walk up to the stand and take the next available driver. After 6:30pm, stands are mostly empty because drivers are on standby for restaurants. Pre-booking matters.

Calling a driver directly

The full directory of all 49 drivers, with their phone numbers and WhatsApp contacts, is on our taxi directory page. Drivers usually answer in French but most understand basic English. A short message like "Hello, I need a taxi from the airport to Gustavia at 3pm" works fine.

What it costs

Daytime fares run 30 to 65 euros per ride. Evening (after 6:30pm) adds 5 euros. Night (midnight to 6am) adds 10 euros. Sundays and holidays add 5 euros. See the full rates page or our breakdown of how much a taxi costs in St. Barth.

Based on the official Collectivité de Saint-Barthélemy fare schedule (2024). Actual fares may vary depending on the driver, the vehicle, and the time of year.

Option 2: Private drivers and transport companies

Beyond independent taxis, there are about six transport companies on the island. They operate fleets, employ chauffeurs, and offer bigger vans for groups of six to eight passengers. Their pricing is similar to taxis, sometimes slightly higher for premium vehicles or for advance booking through a concierge.

Private drivers are the right choice when:

  • You are a group of five or more and need a van.
  • You want a single driver assigned to you for several days.
  • You need to coordinate multiple rides (airport pickup, dinner, sightseeing) with one operator.
  • You want English-speaking drivers, sometimes available at a small premium.

The full list of transport companies is on our private drivers page. Each entry has direct contact and a brief description of services.

Option 3: Rent a car or scooter

For stays of five days or longer, renting a small car is often the most flexible option. The island has about 19 car rental agencies and 9 scooter and quad rental shops. Most are clustered around the airport in St-Jean. Daily rates start around 50 to 70 euros for a small car in low season, 90 to 150 euros in high season.

What kind of vehicle to get

  • Small car (Smart, Fiat 500, Suzuki Jimny): ideal for two adults. Easy to park.
  • Mini Moke or convertible: the iconic St. Barth ride. Fun, breezy, photogenic.
  • SUV: for groups of four or more, or if you want comfort on hilly roads.
  • Scooter: 30 to 50 euros per day. Fastest way to navigate Gustavia, but watch the steep hills if you are inexperienced.

US and Canadian driver's licenses are accepted. You drive on the right. The full directory of rental agencies is on our car and scooter rentals page.

Option 4: WhatsApp concierge

Since there is no Uber, we built the next best thing: a free WhatsApp concierge. You message us with your pickup location, drop-off, and time, and we connect you with an available driver. No app to download. No account. No fees. You pay the driver directly at the regulated fare.

Why it is useful

  • You don't have to figure out which driver to call.
  • We know who is currently available, in your area, and reliable.
  • If your first choice is busy, we keep looking until we find someone.
  • Same-day, next-day, or last-minute. We are reachable 24/7.
  • No price markup. Driver gets paid the standard regulated fare.

What about ride-sharing apps from neighboring islands?

Short answer: no, none of them work in St. Barth.

St. Martin (the larger neighboring island) has a few informal taxi-share apps and a regulated taxi system, but those drivers cannot operate in St. Barth. The two islands have different jurisdictions, different taxi licensing, and different governments. A St. Martin taxi cannot legally pick you up at SBH airport.

Antigua, St. Kitts, and Anguilla are too far away and not part of the same transport system. There is no inter-island Uber or shared ride app.

If you are flying in via St. Martin (SXM) on a connecting flight, your taxi from SBH airport will be a local St. Barth driver. If you are arriving by boat or yacht, you will land at the Gustavia harbor, where there is a small taxi presence, especially during regatta weeks.

Tips for first-time visitors

  • Pre-book your airport transfer in high season. December through April is busy. Drivers fill up. Book 24 hours ahead, ideally before you fly.
  • Save key numbers in your phone before arrival. Bookmark our taxi directory or save our WhatsApp number.
  • Carry euros in cash. Some drivers accept cards but cash is universal. ATMs at the airport and in Gustavia.
  • Standby is your friend for evenings. A 4-hour standby for a dinner out runs about 600 to 1200 euros total in high season. Split among four people, very reasonable.
  • Don't panic if you can't get through. If a driver doesn't answer, message us and we'll find one who is free.
  • For day trips and beach hopping, consider a rental. Beach time costs more by taxi if you go to several beaches in a day. A cheap rental wins.

Frequently asked questions

Correct. Uber, Lyft, Bolt, Cabify, and similar apps do not operate in Saint-Barthélemy. The island has 49 licensed taxi drivers under a regulated fare system. To book, browse our taxi directory or message us on WhatsApp.
Very unlikely. The taxi system is regulated, the population is tiny, and the local government has shown no interest in opening to ride-hailing apps. The current system works for residents and drivers, so there is little political pressure to change it.
Walk to the taxi stand right outside the terminal. During the day, drivers are usually waiting. If the stand is empty, call +590 590 27 75 81 (the airport stand) or message us on WhatsApp and we'll dispatch one.
For stays under five days, taxis are usually simpler. For longer stays, a rental car is more flexible and often cheaper per day. The most popular approach is both: a rental for daytime beach hopping, taxis for dinners so you don't worry about driving back from a restaurant.
Yes. We don't charge a fee, we don't add a markup, and we don't take a commission from drivers. You pay the driver directly at the standard regulated fare. The service exists to help visitors who don't know which driver to call.
Many do, at least enough to handle a basic ride. The official language is French. Drivers in tourist-facing roles usually understand basic English. If language matters to you, mention it when booking through us and we'll match you with an English-speaking driver.
